Roof Framing Design & Structural Calculations

Roof framing design is an important part of every residential building project. A proper roof framing plan shows how the roof is supported, how loads are transferred, and how the roof structure connects to walls, beams, posts, and foundations.

Before sizing roof members, we review the roof shape, span lengths, slope, bearing points, ceiling layout, openings, and support conditions. We also check the expected roof loads, including dead loads, live loads, wind loads, snow loads where required, and any additional equipment or roof features.

Structural Calculations

Structural calculations help confirm that each roof member is safe and suitable for the project. This may include checking rafters, ridge beams, ceiling joists, hips, valleys, headers, beams, posts, and connection points.

Members are reviewed for bending, shear, bearing, deflection, uplift, and safe load transfer. The goal is to create a clear load path from the roof framing down to the walls, beams, columns, footings, or existing structure.

Code-Based Design

Our roof framing design can be prepared with reference to applicable building codes and standards, depending on the project location.

  • International Residential Code (IRC): Used for one- and two-family homes, townhouses, ADUs, additions, and residential remodels.
  • International Building Code (IBC): Used where the project involves larger buildings, mixed-use structures, commercial work, or non-standard residential conditions.
  • BS Codes / Eurocodes: Used for UK-based or British-standard projects, including structural loading, timber design, steel design, wind actions, and safety checks.
