Sonotube Structural Design
Sonotubes are commonly used to form round concrete piers for decks, porches, pole barns, additions, small structures, and light commercial projects. A proper sonotube design must consider the supported load, soil bearing capacity, frost depth, pier diameter, embedment depth, concrete strength, reinforcement, and connection to posts or beams.
Structural Calculations
We calculate dead loads, live loads, roof loads, floor loads, wind uplift, tributary areas, and support reactions to determine the required pier size. The design may include checks for soil bearing, concrete capacity, reinforcement, uplift resistance, lateral stability, anchor bolts, post bases, and load transfer into the ground.
Code-Based Design
- International Residential Code (IRC): Used for residential decks, porches, additions, ADUs, and one- or two-family dwelling projects.
- International Building Code (IBC): Used for commercial, mixed-use, larger structures, or non-standard building conditions.
- ACI 318: Used for concrete design, reinforcement, anchorage, and concrete capacity checks.
- ASCE 7: Used for structural loading such as wind, snow, live loads, dead loads, and load combinations.
- BS Codes / Eurocodes: Used for UK-based projects, including concrete design, loading, foundations, and structural safety checks.
